Streetcar Authority Sets Preliminary Schedule

By Dennis Boone

If you miss your connection during a peak period when Downtown Kansas City’s streetcar line beings operations, you won’t have to wait long to catch another.

The Kansas City Streetcar Authority’s Board of Directors has approved a preliminary operating schedule that calls for 10-minute intervals during peak periods, and 12- to 18-minute waits off-peak.

“The streetcar operations plan approved by the board today reinforces our commitment to provide high quality, frequent streetcar service to support downtown businesses, visitors, and residents,” the authority’s executive director, Tom Gerend, said in a release.

The system will run every day of the week, with this schedule to start with:

  • From 6 a.m. to midnight on Mondays through Thursdays.
  • 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays.
  • 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturdays.
  • 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Sundays.

After service and operations testing is complete, detailed schedules will be announced. Running from the River Market area 2.2 miles south to Crown Center, the streetcar will be free to ride and is expected to start service in early 2016.
